Hip-Hop Chess Federation Scholarship Tournament
These tournaments are a unique part of the Hip-Hop Chess Federation. The HHCF recruits players from schools in diverse and often
underserved communities and youth organizations to participate in the HHCF Scholarship Tournament. The tournament gives novice
but dedicated players a chance to participate and earn scholarship funds. These scholarships can be used for a variety of
educational services and are award to students regardless of current educational experience. “Our goal is to enhance their
education and in some cases give students a second chance”, says founder Adisa Banjoko. The HHCF scholarship program was
created with an understanding that not all students have an equal chance. Many scholarship programs require that the applicant have
a GPA of 3.0 or higher in addition to stellar recommendations from teachers and community service experience. The HHCF
understands that some students work before and after school to help with their families financial needs; others may have to spend
their weekends dedicated to helping their parent by watching over younger siblings. These factors and many other create a situation
where students may not be able to fulfill the requirements of many scholarship programs.
The Hip-Hop Chess Federation believes every student deserves a chance at a bright future and therefore created a scholarship
program that understands that there are situations in life that can affect a students GPA, relationship with teachers and peers and
ability to serve their community. “We wanted to open the doors for all students,” said Banjoko, “With this Scholarship program, we
hope to break the doors down.”
This unique program has special provisions to help students with a GPA under 2.5 and/or have not passed the California Exit Exam.
Students with a GPA at 2.5 or lower are required to use a portion of the scholarship funds to pay for tutor(s) to assist in bring up their
grades and get them on track for a successful life. The HHCF founders believe education is the root of all success in life. Ultimately,
we seek to improve the lives of today’s youth through education and art. Please join us in our quest.
